Green cards/immigrant visas for immediate relatives of U.S. citizens are unlimited, but that is not the case for family preference categories.

There are rules about how many visas can be used in each country and category. The Visa Bulletin helps the government keep track of all these visa numbers. It's also a tool for applicants to use to help understand when they can apply and when it can be approved.
