This week I completed my first full year of solo-practice. One year ago this was an idea, a laptop, and a pile of boxes on my front step. Today I write from my 10th floor office downtown, at my own desk, on my own computer, filled with incredible gratitude for the success of the past year. I know hard work had something to do with this, but I can't help but feel lucky. Lucky that I get to wake up every day and do something I am truly passionate about. Lucky that I get to advocate for my clients on my terms. Lucky that I found office space with experienced and talented colleagues who let me bother them constantly with questions. Lucky that I have a wide network who speak highly enough of my work that word gets around to new clients. This year has been unbelievable and I am so excited for what the next one will bring!

If you or someone you know if charged with a crime, reach out to me, I will fight for you!

As I approach one year of my own practice I'd love if you voted for me for CNY Readers Choice!

I'm not sure I belong in the same category as statewide or even national firms, but it can't hurt to try. Like they say at the Oscars; its an honor to be nominated.

Welcome Evan to the Team! 🤩

We're thrilled to welcome Evan, an accomplished attorney with a strong background in criminal defense and a passion for justice reform. A graduate of the University of Delaware and Syracuse University College of Law, Evan began his legal career representing multinational corporations in mass tort litigation before shifting his focus to criminal defense. He quickly rose to Senior Associate and Head of Legal at a statewide firm before launching his own solo practice in 2024, specializing in violent felonies and the defense of indigent youth. Evan’s deep commitment to supporting vulnerable populations—especially through his work with the Onondaga County Assigned Counsel Program—reflects his belief that many criminal offenses stem from systemic issues like poverty, addiction, and lack of access to services. His dedication to addressing these root causes aligns perfectly with TRACS’ mission. Outside the courtroom, Evan is a music lover, drummer, car enthusiast, world traveler, and devoted uncle. His guiding motto? “Everyone has something to teach you—if you listen, you will learn.” Welcome aboard, Evan! 👏

Criminal Defense is an incredibly difficult area of law to focus on. It's easy to get stuck on the decisions that don't go your way, it's easy to succumb to frustration, easy to feel like the deck is stacked against you, and even easier to lose hope. Last week was one of those weeks where the frustration was almost overwhelming. The best remedy for a rough week is to revisit a good one, and that's what I'm doing here. Despite the tough weeks, despite outcomes that don't go the way I want, I have accomplished a great deal of good for my clients. Despite setbacks I am proud of the wins. This one was a win, and I am steadfast in my conviction that there are more to come!

When I first started representing individuals I was in my late 20's and anxious about giving instruction and advice to people older than me. I was raised with an emphasis on respect toward my elders, and the thought of having tough conversations with someone twice my age terrified me.

Like most things in the law, and in life, practice makes perfect. I found representing people my parents age the same as representing someone my own. Treating your clients with respect and understanding earns you the same in return.

There are quirks however. My favorite that I've noticed is individuals from older generations tend to use "counselor" rather than "lawyer" or "attorney" as younger people often do. I find that extra bit formality so endearing, and it lets me know I have earned their trust through my work, despite the age gap between us.

This gentleman was a pleasure to represent and as much as I urged him to call me Evan, he never did. Always "Counselor Naylor".

New Practice, Same Feedback.

These reviews, especially those that mention compassion, empathy, and ease of process are always my favorite.

Being charged with a crime can be devastating, it can be one of the hardest periods of someones life. Most people have their freedom on the line. Even if they might not risk jail or prison they could lose a job, be suspended or expelled from school, lose their professional license or driving privileges. There is too much at stake to not approach these situations with understanding and compassion.

Emotional detachment can be a useful tool for attorneys to prevent burnout and exhaustion, but I wholeheartedly believe you cannot zealously advocate for someone you don't actually know. To know someone is to understand them and their circumstances. That is what I strive for in every single case.

The secret is out! After years of employment I've finally gone into business for myself. In the few short weeks since I made the transition I've been overwhelmed by the number of people reaching out with words of encouragement and congratulations. This journey has already exceeded my expectations and it hasn't even been a month!

If you or someone you know is charged with a crime you don't just need an attorney; you need an empathetic and zealous advocate in your corner. Someone to take the time to understand you and the circumstances surrounding your charges. Someone who can pair that empathy with rigorous research and a deep knowledge of the law. That is how I secure the best possible outcome for my clients.

Do your research, don't settle for less, and most importantly:
