It was a fantastic experience reconnecting with colleagues from around the world and building new relationships at the International Trademark Association (INTA) 2026 in London.

Our partners Daniel Scola and James Harrington had a wonderful time in London. The gathering provided a great opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen international connections, and spend valuable time with friends and colleagues from across the global IP community.

Navigating post-grant patent changes doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Once a patent is issued, there are four key pathways to address errors or make updates:

■ Certificates of Correction – for minor clerical or typographical fixes
■ Supplemental Examination – to evaluate or correct potentially relevant information
■ Reexamination (Reexam) – to reassess novelty or obviousness, even initiated by third parties
■ Reissue – for more substantial changes, like broadening or narrowing claims

Each option comes with different costs, timelines, and strategic implications—so choosing the right path depends on your specific situation.

Hoffmann & Baron, LLP helps businesses navigate these complex post-grant options and protect their intellectual property with tailored strategies.

Hoffmann & Baron, LLP successfully represented Patent Owner LEONHARD KURZ Stiftung & Co., KG (“KURZ”) in a post grant review proceeding (PGR2026-00011) before the U.S. Patent Trail and Appeal Board.

In an Order dated March 23, 2026, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Director John Squires denied post grant review of KURZ’ U.S. Patent No. 12,220,935, entitled “Decorative Foil, Method for Producing a Decorative Foil and Method for Decorating a Target Substrate,” because it was demonstrated that Petitioner, UNIVACCO Technology Inc., failed to show that it was more likely than not that at least one of the challenged claims of the KURZ patent was unpatentable. Given the strength of its ‘935 patent, KURZ was optimistic it could successfully withstand UNIVACCO’s challenge before the U.S. Patent Trail and Appeal Board.

Steven T. Zuschlag and John T. Gallagher represented LEONHARD KURZ Stiftung & Co., KG in this post grant review proceeding.

Hoffmann & Baron, LLP is proud to announce that Alexandria Stiteler, who serves as Chair of the New Jersey Intellectual Property Law Association's (NJIPLA) Mentorship Program, participated as a panelist in “Seton Hall + NJIPLA Careers in IP,” an event hosted by Seton Hall University School of Law on January 27, 2026.

The panel brought together distinguished individuals in the intellectual property field to provide guidance and insight to law students and early-career attorneys navigating careers in IP. Ms. Stiteler was joined by Hon. Rukhsanah L. Singh, United States Magistrate Judge for the District of New Jersey, and Ashley N. Mays-Williams, Partner at Paul Hastings.

During the discussion, panelists addressed a range of topics, including practical advice for new attorneys entering the profession, recent advancements shaping the intellectual property landscape, and where the IP field is headed in the coming years.

“Programs like this are critical to helping future attorneys understand not only what the IP field looks like today, but how they can position themselves for long-term success,” said Ms. Stiteler. “It was an honor to participate alongside such accomplished colleagues and to engage with students who are eager to shape the future of intellectual property law.”

Daniel A. Scola, Jr., Managing Partner, Hoffmann & Baron, LLP, was recently a guest on the “Good Neighbor Podcast”. Along with Host Garfield Bowen, Scola discussed the importance of protecting intellectual property assets for both businesses and entrepreneurs.

Scola discussed the misconceptions most people have when sharing their ideas. “The one mistake that people make is they come up with an idea and they think, ‘I should run this by other people to see if they think it’s a good idea.’ They disclose their idea or invention, etc., without having a confidentiality agreement in place. By then, it’s too late to protect.”

Additionally, Scola spoke about an area of law that is not taught but rather learned with experience – the art of building connections with people before you ask them for business. He stressed the importance of communication when trying to approach future clients. “The more contact you have with someone, the more trust you build, and the more you know about each other helps both of you form a relationship which often leads to business. This is a skill not taught in law school.”

Daniel A. Scola, Jr., Managing Partner, Hoffmann & Baron, LLP, was recently invited back to join a panel on “Be That Lawyer LIVE!” Scola discussed how to build lasting connections that will benefit business growth.

Scola explained how he builds a relationship from the ground up, “It’s important to find out what people’s needs are and not try to sell. If I’m interested in them, they usually become interested in me. Find out about them, their family, their interests, their passions, etc. A lot of the time you’ll find enough commonality that they become not just a contact, but a friend.”
