Charleston’s most iconic tradition is back tomorrow, and with it comes an early morning, a lot of energy, and a few road closures to plan around.
The Cooper River Bridge Run kicks off at 8:00 AM, bringing thousands of runners and walkers across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge from Mount Pleasant into Downtown Charleston. It’s one of those days that truly captures the spirit of our city — community, movement, and a whole lot of excitement.
With that said, expect major traffic impacts throughout the morning. The bridge will be fully closed, and many downtown streets (including Meeting, King, and Calhoun) will begin shutting down as early as midnight, with full closures in place by sunrise. Roads will gradually reopen late morning into early afternoon, but areas near the finish line will take a bit longer.
If you’re participating, plan for an early start. Shuttle pickups from downtown begin around 5:00 AM, and getting to the start line requires extra time and patience — but once you’re there, the energy is unmatched.
If you’re not running, just know this is not your average Saturday:
• Avoid traveling between Mount Pleasant and downtown in the morning
• Do not rely on the bridge — it will be closed
• Plan errands either early or later in the day
• Expect crowds, detours, and a lively downtown scene
At the end of the day, it’s more than just a race — it’s a Charleston moment. Whether you’re running it, cheering someone on, or just navigating around it, lean into the energy and give yourself a little extra time to get where you’re going.
