Butcher Elder Law

Butcher Elder Law At Butcher Elder Law, we believe estate planning shouldn't feel overwhelming. Every situation is different, so we listen first.

Butcher Elder Law helps Northeast Ohio families protect what they've worked hard to build β€” preventing costly mistakes and preserving what matters most, with simple plans they can feel good about.
πŸ“ž 440-268-8284 We take the time to simplify the complex β€” breaking down estate planning, Medicaid planning, and asset protection so you can make confident decisions based on what actually matters to your

family. Then we build a customized plan around your life β€” one that accounts for disability, long-term care, and what happens after you're gone. Whether you're an everyday family or a business owner, we're here to make sure nothing gets missed. And we're not a one-and-done firm. Life changes, and your plan should too. Butcher Elder Law is in this with you for the long run.

'How often should I update my estate plan?'

Great question - and one many people forget to ask after getting their initial documents in order.

Review your estate plan after any major life change, including:

πŸ”„ Marriage or divorce
πŸ”„ Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild
πŸ”„ Death of a named beneficiary, executor, or trustee
πŸ”„ Significant change in your assets or finances
πŸ”„ Moving to a new state
πŸ”„ A serious change in health

And even without a major life event β€” a general review every 3 to 5 years is a smart habit.

Life changes. Your plan should too.

Estate planning myth: once you set up an irrevocable trust, it's locked forever and can never be changed.

Not true. The right trust can still give you flexibility to make changes down the road, while protecting your assets from creditors, predators, and the high cost of long-term care.
Sam Butcher explains how it works in under a minute. πŸ‘‡

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Elder abuse can take many forms, and some of the most common are also the easiest to overlook, but they're often preventable with the right planning in place. A solid estate plan does more than protect assets. It protects the people you love from being taken advantage of when they're most vulnerable.

A few simple safeguards make a real difference:
1. Naming a trusted power of attorney before it's needed
2. Setting up checks so no one person has unchecked control
3. Having clear, documented wishes that everyone understands

Planning ahead isn't about fear. It's about peace of mind, for you and your family.

Questions? We're always happy to help.

β˜€οΈ Sunday thought:

'Peace of mind isn't just a feeling. It's something you can actually plan for.'

That's what estate planning is, at its core - not paperwork, but protection. Love made actionable.

Happy Sunday from all of us at Butcher Elder Law. 🧑

Some cases are simple. Others are complicated, emotional, and high-stakes. Those are the ones that show you what a firm is really made of.

Christy came to us with her father's complex case, and her words mean the world to us:

"To say they are professional and prepared is an understatement. The work they put in with my father's complicated case was nothing short of extraordinary. I'd give a 10/10 if I could."

Thank you, Christy. Walking families through the hard ones is exactly why we do this. 🧑

If your family is facing a complicated situation and you're not sure where to start, we're here to help.

You did the responsible thing. You made a will.

Here's what most people never hear: a will doesn't keep your family out of probate. It sends them right into it. That means months of waiting, court costs, and your private business made public.

Probate is just the first surprise.

There's also the cost of care that can drain a lifetime of savings in under a year.

There's the question of who speaks for you if you ever can't.

There's the inheritance that can accidentally cost a loved one with disabilities their benefits.

The good news is that every one of these is avoidable, and it comes down to three straightforward steps.

We'll walk you through all three, in plain English, for free.

We had a wonderful time at ArchWell Health's open house in Parma this week! Our own Jeff Dodge was on hand to connect with members of the community and share how planning today can protect what matters most down the road.

ArchWell Health does great work supporting adults 60+ with primary care, wellness programs, and a welcoming space to stay active and connected. We're always grateful for the chance to be out in the community alongside organizations that care about Northeast Ohio seniors the way we do.

Thanks for having us! 🧑

πŸ“– New on the blog: Who Are the Key Players in Special Needs Planning?

If you have a loved one with a disability, effective planning involves more than just one attorney. There's a whole team β€” and understanding who does what is the first step to building the right plan.

From the trustee who manages the Special Needs Trust to the care manager who supports day-to-day planning, each person plays a distinct and critical role.

Butcher Elder Law team had a wonderful time at the Strongsville Senior Center this Monday for their Movie Matinee! We're proud to be sponsoring this series, and this was the first of six matinees we'll be supporting.

Sam stopped by to share a few words with everyone before the show, and we got to spend time with neighbors over popcorn, sweet treats, and a great film. Being out in the community with our seniors is exactly where we love to be. 🧑
