Back to school means busy roads again, and the change happens quickly for drivers in Stratford and across Fairfield County. Morning routes that were quiet in August now have kids walking to bus stops, crossing guards at intersections, and traffic backing up near school entrances.
One rule catches a lot of drivers off guard. Since 2021, Connecticut law has required you to slow down or stop when someone at a crosswalk signals an intent to cross, whether they raise a hand, step to the curb, or move a cane, stroller, wheelchair, or leashed dog into the crosswalk entrance. You don't have to wait until they're already in the road, and failing to yield can carry a fine of up to $500.
The bad habits that many people carry throughout the year, such as rolling through a stop sign, drifting a few miles over the limit, or glancing at a phone at a red light, carry a lot more risk when children are the ones on foot.
