For many companies, intellectual property is one of their most valuable assets, and it's often under-protected. Sarah will explain what can be trademarked, why registration is worth it, how the USPTO process works, and what your options are if an application is denied.

Congratulations to Principal Attorney David Bohm, named to the Missouri Lawyer Media’s 2026 POWER List in Employment Law for the second year running.

Across more than four decades, David has handled discrimination, wrongful termination, whistleblower, and restrictive covenant matters at the state and federal level, including before the Missouri Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit. He also represents doctors, nurses, and psychologists facing licensing board complaints and hospital privilege issues, and he has helped draft legislation now codified in Missouri law.

We had a great time supporting the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Young Professionals Association at their trivia night fundraiser last Friday. The theme of the evening was "pajama party," and we relished the chance to ditch the suits for something a little more comfortable.

It was a sold-out affair with some tough competition. Representing Danna McKitrick: attorneys Sarah Ayers and Kristina Yagelski and marketing manager Brett Figus.

While we may have come up short points-wise, we're proud to be a supporter of the YPA, which helps early- to mid-career professionals who want to contribute their time, talent, and treasure to the Girl Scout mission, while building professional networks and enhancing leadership skills.

It's the massive wave of Americans reaching retirement age, and it's about to have a major impact on business ownership here in St. Louis. Roughly 70% of regional business owners are at or near retirement age, yet only about a quarter of business owners have an actual succession plan on the books.

This can create serious problems, as an unexpected death, disability, divorce, disagreement, or financial distress (the five "Ds") can force a business transition long before an owner intended.

You already know to revisit your estate plan when you get married, have a child, or start a business. Now add one more life event to the list: when moving trucks are in your future.

Estate plans are governed by the law of the state where you reside, and those laws are not interchangeable. In our latest blog, attorney Mike McKitrick looks at a recent case that shows how quickly this can go awry.

In brief: a man moved from Illinois to Florida and asked his longtime Illinois attorney to amend his trust so his new partner would receive his Florida home. After his death, the Florida courts invalidated the amendment. Everyone agreed on what he wanted. The house went to his children anyway.

If a move is on your horizon, review your plan before you go. Talk to your current estate planning attorney, and also to one licensed in your new state.
