You already know to revisit your estate plan when you get married, have a child, or start a business. Now add one more life event to the list: when moving trucks are in your future.

Estate plans are governed by the law of the state where you reside, and those laws are not interchangeable. In our latest blog, attorney Mike McKitrick looks at a recent case that shows how quickly this can go awry.

In brief: a man moved from Illinois to Florida and asked his longtime Illinois attorney to amend his trust so his new partner would receive his Florida home. After his death, the Florida courts invalidated the amendment. Everyone agreed on what he wanted. The house went to his children anyway.

If a move is on your horizon, review your plan before you go. Talk to your current estate planning attorney, and also to one licensed in your new state.

We're proud to announce principal attorney Katherine Flett has been named to the 2027 edition of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America® for her work in Insurance Law and Litigation – Labor and Employment. It is her second year on the list in both categories.

Best Lawyers® is chosen entirely through peer review. This year's Ones to Watch list was determined by 1.3 million evaluations submitted by more than 16,000 lawyers.

Since joining Danna McKitrick in 2016, Flett has built a practice that spans employment disputes, business and corporate law, and litigation. She is recognized for her thorough analysis, clear communication, and ability to guide clients through complex and often high-stakes matters. Her recognition in two distinct categories reflects the range of her work and the respect she has earned across the legal community.

"Kate has earned this recognition through hard work, and it speaks to her skill as a lawyer, diligent effort, and care she brings to every client she represents," said President & Principal Attorney Ruth Binger, of Danna McKitrick. "We see her excellence every day, and it's wonderful to know her peers see it too."

Congratulations, Kate!

Attorney Katherine Flett was featured on the SheLed Badass podcast that explores leadership, credibility, and what work-life balance actually looks like. Together with hosts Debi Corrie, CPA, CGMA and Gabriela S. Ramírez-Arellano, they covered a remarkable amount of ground in just 30 minutes.

In the episode, Kate also talks about growing up in a family business, why she went into law and joined Danna McKitrick, and how her work (and the trust she's gained in the business community) allows her to solve problems for her clients in a practical way.

Well worth a listen this morning if you need a little inspiration.

A growing number of Missouri businesses are receiving demand letters alleging that common web technologies on their websites violate a 1967 California law that predates the internet.

The California Invasion of Privacy Act (commonly referred to as C**A) was originally designed to prevent wiretapping of telephones. Today, it's being applied to tools like Google Analytics, online chat bars and forms, social media advertising trackers, and more.

These website privacy complaints (often from the same "serial tester") have targeted manufacturers, distributors, professional service firms, and other companies with little apparent connection to California — and there's been a lot of them. To date, thousands of C**A demand letters have been sent to businesses nationwide, including right here in Missouri.

If your business has a website, odds are you're potentially at risk. In our latest article, principal attorney Ruth Binger does a deep dive into C**A demand letters and explains everything business owners need to know.

There is something special about bringing accomplished women in business together in one room.

Danna McKitrick was proud to have our partner, Katherine Flett, co-host a cookie decorating and networking event with Bea Doerr of Insperity at SugarBot Sweet Shop. It was a wonderful afternoon of meaningful conversations, new and renewed connections, and plenty of laughter among a powerhouse group of women from across our business community.

Some well-deserved recognition for the person who keeps Danna McKitrick running: our director of administration, Jim Baalmann, has been named to Missouri Lawyers Media's 2026 Unsung Legal Heroes list.

For nearly three decades, Jim has been the steady hand behind Danna McKitrick, overseeing everything from HR and finance to IT and office operations, guiding us through years of technological change, and mentoring people at every level along the way. While our attorneys often tend to get the headlines, Jim is proof that the people behind the scenes deserve them too.

Congratulations, Jim!
