From a glass of w**e at Sasha's On Shaw | W**e Bar on one end of Shaw to Tower Grove Park on the other, with some great scenery along the way. 🍷🌳

Even from one end of the neighborhood to the other, the walk is less than 10 minutes (walking speed may vary). That’s one of my favorite things about living in Shaw: the park always feels close.

Ever walk through Tower Grove South and notice a house that looks like it used to be a shop? 👀

Those big storefront windows and doors right on the sidewalk are hard to miss. Today they’re homes, but I always wonder what used to be there and who remembers them when they were still open.

⭐️ RANDOM NEIGHBORHOOD FACT: OLD HOME EDITION ⭐️

Ever notice those metal stars on old brick homes around St. Louis?

They’re called star anchors, and they’re actually doing a lot more than just looking cool.

Star anchors are attached to long metal tie rods that run through the structure of the home. Their job is to help tie the exterior masonry walls back into the floor and roof framing, which can help keep those old brick walls from bowing, shifting, or pulling away over time.

You see them so often around St. Louis because we have a ton of 100+ year-old masonry homes. As these buildings settle and move over the decades, star anchors were one of the ways builders and homeowners reinforced the structure and helped keep those heavy brick walls in place.

They come in different shapes and styles, but the star is probably the one you’ll notice most often.

Next time you’re walking through one of St. Louis’ older neighborhoods, look up. Once you know what they are, you’ll start seeing them everywhere.
