Today is National 811 Day. Whether you're setting a fence post or planting a tree, a utility line could sit inches below where you're about to put a shovel. Striking a gas or electric line can cause burns, explosions and outages that take out the whole block.

Call 811 or file a request online at least two working days before you break ground and a locator will come mark the lines. It's free and only takes a few minutes. In most cases it's also required by law in both Missouri and Illinois.
