The minutes right after a crash are a blur for almost everyone. If you are able, keep this short list in mind before you leave the scene:

▪️Get medical attention, even if you feel fine. Adrenaline and shock can mask a lot.
▪️Photograph the vehicles, the road, the traffic signals or signs, and any visible injuries.
▪️Collect names and numbers for the other driver and for anyone who saw what happened.
▪️Describe the facts only. Do not guess out loud about who was at fault.

Save everything afterward, including the police report number, discharge papers, and every bill that follows.

Documentation matters because a claim gets built from what can be shown, not from what you remember later on. Photos taken at the scene tend to be the most useful evidence in a case, and they only take seconds to capture.

Take the opportunity to equip yourself with important knowledge (and get in touch with us) before an adjuster reaches out. Our FAQ page covers the questions we hear most after an accident, and you can access it by visiting stephenskellylaw.com/faq/.

Anyone who drives I-64 or I-270 in August knows the roads can feel different this time of year. More people are traveling, more work zones appear overnight, and the evening rush stretches later.

This mix shows up in the collisions we handle most often right now, whether it’s a rear-end crash in slowed traffic near construction, a side impact at an intersection when someone tries to beat a light, or a late-night incident involving a driver who should not have been behind the wheel at all.

What it boils down to is that the extra second before you change lanes and the car length you leave ahead of you are worthwhile and key in keeping you and others safe.

If a drive around town results in a wreck, our team is here to help. Learn more about how we handle collision cases at stephenskellylaw.com/car-accidents/.

One of the most useful conversations you can have this month is with your own insurance agent. Here’s why.

Missouri auto policies are required to include uninsured motorist coverage for bodily injury, usually at the state minimum. This type of protection steps in when the person who hit you carries no policy at all, or in many hit-and-run situations where the driver is never identified.

Underinsured motorist coverage works differently. It’s optional, you pay a separate premium for it, and it applies when the at-fault driver had insurance that was simply too small to cover what happened to you.

The second gap is the one that catches people off guard. A driver carrying state minimum limits can cause an injury that costs far more than those limits will ever pay, and without underinsured coverage of your own, there may be nowhere else to look.

Pull out your declarations page and check both lines. If you have questions about how any of it would apply to your family, reach out to us at stephenskellylaw.com/contact-us/.

When a crash happens, fault is not always one-sided. In some cases, both parties may share responsibility. That is where comparative negligence applies. Comparative negligence is a legal doctrine that reduces an injured person’s compensation based on their percentage of fault.

Insurance companies may attempt to shift blame to reduce payouts, so even a small change in fault percentage can significantly impact your recovery. Swipe for more information.

If you have been injured and are concerned about shared fault, do not make assumptions about your case. Contact us to discuss your situation and protect your right to full and fair compensation.

A hidden hazard like a broken walkway or an unmarked spill can change your life in a single second. Property owners have a responsibility to keep their premises safe for everyone. When they don't, the consequences shouldn't be yours to carry alone.

If you’ve been hurt due to a dangerous condition, your recovery matters. Let’s talk about your next steps: https://stephenskellylaw.com/contact-us/

If you've just been in a collision, it can be hard to think clearly. Here are a few basics to keep in mind:

✅ Get to safety. Move out of traffic if you can do so without making injuries worse.

✅ Get medical attention. Even if you feel okay, get checked out. Some injuries don't show up right away.

✅ Document the scene. Photos, names, insurance info, and witness contact information all matter later.

✅ Don't minimize what happened. Avoid saying you're "fine" at the scene. You may not know the full picture yet.

The steps you take right after a crash can affect your health and your legal options down the road. When you're ready to talk through next steps, we're here.
