ArchCity Defenders, Inc.

ArchCity Defenders, Inc. ArchCity Defenders (ACD) is a holistic legal advocacy organization that combats the criminalization Louis region and beyond.

ACD’s foundation of civil and criminal legal representation, social services, impact litigation, policy and media advocacy, and community collaboration achieves and inspires justice and equitable outcomes for people throughout the St. VISION
ArchCity Defenders envisions a society liberated from systems of oppression where the promise of justice and racial equity is realized; communities where our approach to public safety prioritizes investment in well-being, health, and transformation without relying on criminalization and incarceration; and people living freely in their communities, thriving regardless of their race or income. VALUES
ArchCity Defenders is committed to revolutionary justice. We believe that the law is not the final arbiter of justice; rather, we advance a view of justice rooted in love, support, accountability, and equity for all people. We are an antiracist organization that combats racist power, policy, and ideas. Because we understand antiracism to be intersectional, we stand with all people subject to abusive systems of power and privilege. We believe that true antiracism is also feminist, q***r, anti-nativist, and anti-poverty, which means that we oppose the exploitative system of capitalism that mass produces poverty. We believe in advocacy that is people- and community-centered. We are committed to the self-determination of our clients and their communities, and thus are committed to supporting them in building power to exert control over their own lives and destiny. In our work with clients, partners, and each other, we strive toward abolition of the prison-industrial complex. We believe that our challenges are best addressed by people in intentional and supportive community with each other–with universal access to healthcare, housing, educational and employment opportunities, and shared public spaces–and not by prisons and jails, policing, or prosecution.

Our Media and Policy Advocacy team tells the story of ArchCity Defenders and our clients through multimedia content and research. The three-person "Comms" team secures earned media, creates original video content and print publications, and produces blog posts to expose injustice and translate policy.

This year, coverage spanned major milestones, including the "Hell on Hall Street" documentary premiere, along with documenting the move to the Northside Movement Center.

Everything this team generates and publishes is grounded in our clients' lived experiences, shared with purpose and timeliness to cover the stories mainstream outlets miss or choose to ignore. We see real-time impact and immediate concrete outcomes beyond online engagement. Visit the link to learn more.

Our Systemic Civil Rights Litigation team challenges abusive and inhumane practices by police, courts, jails, and private profiteers that dehumanize our clients and violate their rights. In addition to helping individual clients, we investigate and file lawsuits.

Over the last year, we've won landmark cases in Calverton Park, St. Louis City, and have filed on behalf of protestors and First Amendment rights. Learn more about our Civil Litigation team in our full Annual Report at the link.

The issue here isn’t just a letter... it’s about how we treat our unhoused neighbors.

Today, KB Doman, one of our staff attorneys and long-time street outreach volunteer with St. Louis Winter Outreach and Tent Mission STL joins St. Louis Public Radio's STL on the Air program to discuss the dehumanizing letter sent by South Grand, the community backlash, and what this says about our values as a city and the services we fund, especially for community members who don't have a safe, affordable place to call home.

Delivering accuracy and understanding through storytelling that reveals context and humanity in the news. Award-winning local and NPR news, podcasts and music.

Last week, a federal judge approved the $465,000 settlement in the Reise et al. v. City of Calverton Park et al. class action lawsuit filed by ArchCity Defenders. The City of Calverton Park has agreed to pay more than 100 impacted residents, after years of towing vehicles from private driveways simply for having expired tags.

In addition to payments to class members, the settlement requires the City to rewrite its ordinance so that a vehicle is no longer considered towable or fineable just because it has expired tags, to cap abusive fees associated with towings, and to provide fairer hearings related to nuisance abatement. This decision comes nearly three years after filing the lawsuit.

Over the last year, our Holistic Direct Services teams have shown up where our clients have needed them most. Our attorneys logged hundreds of court appearances, defending clients in eviction, civil, criminal, and municipal court.

Meanwhile, our Social Services team drove hundreds of miles to help clients meet survival needs, access technology, and connect with resources.

Whether our teams were in the courtroom or living room, our approach was the same: client led holistic advocacy. Take a look at our Holistic Direct Services teams of Legal Representation and Social Services, then head over to the link to read our full 2025-2026 Annual Report.
