Missouri voters struck down the state's abortion ban in 2024, now politicians are trying to overturn the will of the voters and repeal the Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment, which provides the right to access birth control, maternal care, IVF, and abortion care. 👇🏿👇🏽👇🏻

Sports bans suck.

This legislation seeks to repeal the 2027 expiration date on the state’s ban on transgender students playing on school sports teams consistent with their gender identity.

But this legislation is not really about sports. It is about erasing and excluding trans people from participation in all aspects of public life. This bill wastes critical state resources and, in the process, harming some of the most vulnerable young people in our state. Meanwhile, leading advocates for women’s sports support the inclusion of trans women and girls. Though this bill targets trans people—who make up just a tiny fraction of participants in school sports programs—it will harm all women and girls, by enabling any school official or adult to question and harass young women who try to participate in school sports. The enforcement of this law would invite gross scrutiny and harassment of all young women and girls and set a dangerous precedent for state overreach.

Transgender young people want to participate in school sports for the same reasons as anybody else: to find a sense of belonging and social engagement, to be a part of a team, and to challenge themselves. For trans youth, being able to be a part of a team can even be lifesaving. But Missouri is needlessly seeking to permanently exclude them from enjoying the benefits of sports on equal terms with their non-transgender peers. Not only does this proposed law discriminate against trans youth in ways that compromise their health, social and emotional development, and safety, but it also raises a host of privacy concerns for all students.
