A records request does not always end with a file in hand.
Sealed, impounded, juvenile, and expunged records are subject to access restrictions. They may not appear in an online docket, and a clerk may require proof of authorization, a court order, or a request through the proper channel.
Before requesting a restricted record, confirm:
• The county and case number
• Whether the record is sealed, impounded, juvenile, or expunged
• Who is legally authorized to access it
• Whether a court order or certified authorization is required
• Whether the request is for inspection, copies, or certified copies
For Chicago-area law firms, agencies, and businesses, accurate retrieval starts with understanding the record’s status, not simply submitting a generic request.
The VBS Consultants supports legal teams with court filing and document retrieval, legal research, mobile and electronic notary services, skip tracing, and process serving. We handle the administrative details carefully while respecting courthouse procedures and access limitations.
