Everything about the way she sat there said she was beaten down. Hair that simply hung loose down her shoulders with no sense of cut or style. Shoulder slumped. The tone of her voice flat as she said,

“ The first two years of our marriage were pretty good, then I realized we made a mistake. With each year and each child my sadness grew. My marriage just feels so empty.“

I looked down at her information form- married in 1994. Miserable for more than 30 years. 30 years of hanging onto loose sand at the edge of the cliff.

“I don’t know if I should leave. How would I survive?”

I looked up at her from the page on which I was taking notes. I paused to really look at her face, study her hollowed expression, and listen to each breath that sounded like an exhausted sigh.

When she felt the silence linger, she looked up to meet my eyes, and I said “are you really ready to run out the clock on the next 30 years of your life?”
