For Ch 13 Bankruptcy clients, please be aware:

We have learned that some debtors in Chapter 13 are receiving phone calls claiming to be from the Bankruptcy Court. The callers are demanding a payment, which may include Zelle, Venmo, or purchasing a pre-paid card. The callers may sound convincing and utilize real information, including a real address, the real address for the Court or Trustee, real names of Court or Trustee personnel, or even the names of Judges, to make the scam appear credible. Scammers may “spoof” the phone number on caller ID so that the call falsely appears to be from the Court, Trustee, or other government agency. These calls are not originating from the Court or the Chapter 13 Trustee.

Please remind your clients not to provide any personal information, credit card numbers, pre-paid card numbers, or money to any caller demanding payment for a Chapter 13 case. The Court or the Trustee will never demand payments over the phone. The Court or the Trustee will never request payment in the form of Zelle, Venmo, or a gift card. Any official correspondence will come by mail directly from the Court or the Trustee. The office only accepts online payments through the TFS website or by cashier’s check or money order sent to the address provided on the initial bankruptcy notice.

If your clients do receive any suspicious communications, please ask them to report the call by e-mail to the fraud hotline at [email protected].
