Many travelers confuse their visa expiration date with the date they must leave the United States. These are two different things!

Here is what you need to understand:

📌 1. YOUR VISA ALLOWS YOU TO SEEK ENTRY.
A U.S. visa generally allows you to travel to a port of entry and request admission. It does not determine how long you may stay after admission.

📌 2. YOUR AUTHORIZED STAY IS DETERMINED SEPARATELY.
For many temporary visitors, the authorized period of stay is recorded on their Form I-94 or electronic admission record.

📌 3. CHECK YOUR I-94 RECORD.
If you were admitted as a temporary visitor, check your I-94 record to understand your authorized period of stay and any applicable conditions.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Remaining in the United States beyond your authorized stay can have serious immigration consequences, even if your visa stamp has not yet expired.

REMEMBER: Visa validity and authorized stay are not the same thing. Always check the dates and conditions that apply to your individual situation.

A receipt notice simply confirms that USCIS has received and accepted your filing for processing. Your case may still go through additional review, including a possible Request for Evidence (RFE), Notice of Intent to Deny (NOID), approval, or denial.

U.S. VISA UPDATE: SOME B1/B2 APPLICANTS MAY FACE A VISA BOND OF UP TO $20,000

The U.S. Department of State has updated its official list of countries subject to the Visa Bond requirement.

Under the current program, certain nationals who are otherwise eligible for a B1/B2 visitor visa may be required to post a bond of:

💰 $10,000
💰 $15,000
💰 $20,000

The specific amount is determined at the time of the visa interview.

IMPORTANT:

A visa bond does not guarantee visa approval.

Applicants should NOT pay a visa bond unless a consular officer specifically directs them to do so. The Department of State says applicants will receive instructions for payment through the official U.S. government payment process.

The current list includes several African countries, including Nigeria, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, among others. Ghana is not currently on the State Department’s visa-bond list.

If you are applying for a U.S. visitor visa, make sure you understand the requirements that apply to your nationality and circumstances before making any payment or travel arrangements.
