I watched one of my lifelong friends step onto a stage last night and answer a bigger call to serve.

Nate Powell and I have known each other since we were 10 years old. We grew up together, and in 2005 we made another big decision together. We raised our right hands and joined the United States Marine Corps.

Since then I’ve watched him continue to live a life of service.

He became a husband.
A father.
A United States Marine.
And today he serves our community as a full-time Spokane firefighter.

Last night I sat in a room with more than a hundred people as Nate announced his run for Congress in Washington’s 5th District.

What moved me most wasn’t the campaign. It was the same thing I’ve always seen in him.

A genuine heart for people.

His message was about the working families of Eastern Washington. The people trying to build a life, raise their kids, and create opportunity in this region we all call home.

The same kind of families I work with every day as they move here and build their lives in the Spokane area.

Watching someone you’ve known since childhood step forward to carry that kind of responsibility hits differently.

Most out-of-state buyers moving to Spokane fall in love with the wrong houses.

There was a time when I was filming videos that barely anyone watched.

Awkward intros. Bad lighting. Overthinking every word.

I remember questioning whether it was worth it. Whether anyone cared. Whether I was just talking into the void.

But I kept showing up.

Not because it was easy. Not because it was polished. But because I believed that consistency compounds.

I think a lot of men are wired that way. We are raised to figure it out. Push through. Carry the load ourselves.

Self-reliance becomes a badge of honor.

But here is what experience has taught me.

There is a difference between strength and isolation.

Trying to do everything alone does not make you strong. It often just makes things harder than they need to be.

The most capable people I know ask for guidance early. They surround themselves with people who have already walked the path. Not because they cannot handle it, but because they value efficiency, perspective, and support.

When you are navigating something complex, whether it is a career shift, a big move, or a new chapter in life, having the right person in your corner changes everything.

It is not surrender.
It is strategy.

If you have been trying to figure it all out on your own and feeling the weight of it, maybe it is not a weakness to reach out.
