Fraud is on the rise! Criminals are entering into transactions to sell property they do not own. These dirtbags might even have your driver's license information and print a fake with a different photo. Most closing agents will mail fraud alerts and a preliminary letter to the address of the property being sold and/or the address on record with the county. Make sure your information is up to date and stay vigilant, especially if you own vacant land.
Other fun scams include fraudulent phone calls from thieves pretending they work at a law firm, demanding immediate payment or threatening that a lawsuit will be filed. They may even leave a phone number to call back where a real person picks up and pretends to be the answering service for several different firms. A legitimate law firm will NEVER do this. (Sidenote: If you play along and call back and they pronounce our fine town as "Spo-CANE, Warshington," please laugh and hang up.)
