A lot of couples assume that if they mostly agree, they can simply file paperwork themselves and move on.

Sometimes they can.

But many people are surprised to learn there are issues they never discussed — especially retirement accounts, child support calculations, parenting plans, and long-term financial details.

In Washington, retirement accounts often require separate court orders that people do not realize are necessary until much later.

That does not mean divorce has to become a courtroom battle.

It does mean getting guidance early can help people avoid expensive mistakes and unnecessary stress later.
