Eric was recently featured in the South Dakota State Bar newsletter for his Pro Bono casework.

Eric assisted an individual through Access to Justice, Inc. (A2J) with a difficult family law matter that they were unable to previously have representation for due to economic conditions. A2J provides Low Bono (reduced) and Pro Bono (free) legal services to individuals under the poverty line. The program relies on licensed attorneys, like Eric, willing to take on these cases and clients. This is part of Schlimgen Law Firm's commitment to providing meaningful legal representation to all individuals within our community.

Individuals seeking reduced or free legal services should reach out to Access to Justice, Inc. as there are a multitude of competent private attorneys in the Black Hills who participate in this program and can be matched with clients who qualify.

Eric recently presented a Family Law Masterclass to students from University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law at the Pennington County Courthouse in Rapid City, SD.

The students were assisting low-income individuals with pro se divorces through the Works Clinic, led by Professor Trefz, gaining hands-on experience while expanding access to justice.

Eric's Family Law Masterclass offered both practical insight and real-world perspective into the practice of family law. Drawing from years of courtroom and negotiation experience, I spoke candidly about:

Managing client expectations in emotionally charged cases

The critical benefits of organization and preparation in family law litigation

A practical best-practices framework for handling divorce and custody matters

What it means to be a “bulldog” advocate vs. an effective advocate

An overview of unique and complex cases that fall under the broad umbrella of family law

Family law is rarely just about statutes and procedure, it is about people navigating some of the most difficult moments of their lives and needing an informed, confident advocate on their side. Eric emphasized the importance of balancing firm advocacy with professionalism, empathy, and ethical responsibility.

Eric is always glad to support the next generation of South Dakota attorneys and appreciates the opportunity to share his experiences.

Trying to raise awareness of free/reduced costs legal services for pro-se (both sides unrepresented) divorce actions in the Black Hills area.

Are you representing yourself in a divorce case? A free legal clinic providing assistance with divorce and custody forms will be held in Rapid City on Monday, March 2, 2026.

The legal clinic is presented by WORKS Clinic of the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law with assistance from the State Bar of South Dakota and the South Dakota Bar Foundation. Participant eligibility requirements apply. Both parties must be self-represented, and one party must live in South Dakota.

Eric will be in Pierre this Wednesday, at 9:45 a.m. (Morriss v. Morriss, Appeal 31118) arguing the issues of implied contracts, express contracts, ratification, as well as the plain error standard regarding the circuit court's Findings of Facts and Conclusions of Law for the award of attorney fees from abuse of process.

Out of the Courtroom, into the classroom!

Last week, Eric had the opportunity to step out of the office and into a local middle school classroom for Career Day—and it was a reminder of just how curious (and sharp) the next generation really is. Eric is used to tough battles in the courtroom, but competing with a police officer and firefighter on career day was one for the books!

During the visit, Eric spoke with students about what lawyers actually do, beyond what they see on TV or in movies. The conversation covered everything from helping people solve problems and navigate difficult situations, to the importance of critical thinking, communication, and fairness. Students asked thoughtful questions about law school, courtroom work, and what a “day in the life” of a lawyer really looks like.

A big thank you to the teachers and staff who made the day possible, and to the students for their great questions and enthusiasm.
