I've been practicing family law now for over ten years, and one of the most frustrating procedural oddities I've had to deal with is Rule 25 of the Family Court Rules, which stated that discovery (the process of getting evidence and information from the opposing party) had to be approved by the Court in any Family Court case. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. As of May 1, 2017, Rule 25 has been amended and discovery is now automatic in Family Court as it is in other civil actions.

In any given week, I get at least one or two calls from someone who is in the middle of a family court case without a lawyer and it suddenly dawns on them they don't know what they are doing. Depending on the circumstances, I used to agree to take on such cases, especially when money was the reason the person didn't hire an attorney in the beginning, and had now saved up enough (maybe) to do so. But I no longer take on these type cases no matter what the circumstances because the client generally has unrealistic expectations about what I (or any attorney) can do coming into a case late--especially when the client (representing himself or herself) has screwed things up and thinks that "everything will be okay" now that they have a lawyer. It won't. It may be a little better, but the time to get an attorney is at the start of a family court case, not in the middle--or at the very end with a trial date pending. Despite the attorney's best efforts, when things don't turn out too good for clients who hire an attorney late in the game, it's the attorney who always gets the blame.
