For decades, social scientists have studied the influence of family structures on child development. These studies have looked at the number of parents in the family, the gender of the parents, their s*xual orientation, their genetic relatedness to the children, their gestational relatedness to the children and whether or not their family was created by assisted reproductive technology.

A review of forty years of research has evaluated all types of “new family” forms. This in-depth review has failed to support the assertion that the traditional family is necessarily the best environment in which to raise children. Susan Golombok, who has systematically
reviewed the research on new family forms—the world over—summarizes the findings in her book Modern Families:

“Families come in all shapes and sizes. Whether children have one parent or two, whether their parents are male or female, whether their parents are the same s*x or the opposite s*x, whether they have a genetic or gestational link to their parents, and whether they have
been conceived naturally or through assisted reproduction, seem to matter less for children than does the quality of family relationships, the support of their community and the attitudes of the society in
which they live.”

The message is clear: The key to psychologically healthy children is not the family structure, but rather the quality of the parents’ relationships with their children—children flourish where their parents are attentive, receptive, supportive, and spend time interacting with them. Furthermore, the “resounding consensus” among the country’s leading pediatric, psychological, psychiatric, and child welfare service providers and scholars is that children who are raised by gay and le***an parents are as well-adjusted and as psychologically, emotionally, educationally, and socially successful as children of heteros*xual parents.

Birth parents cannot profit financially from placing their child for adoption. They can, however, receive assistance with pregnancy related expenses, private counseling, or having legal representation at no cost to them.

The South Carolina adoption statute allows a relative of a child (often grandparents, aunts, uncles or other relatives) to adopt that child while foregoing many of the formalities and requirements of other adoptions. For instance, depending on the relationship between you and the child you are hoping to adopt, no accounting of disbursements is required to be presented to the court, no investigation (pre­placement or post­placement) report is required, and no medical and social history (child report) is required.
