Matt Bailey grew up in Hickory Valley, on the border of White and Van Buren Counties. His parents are David Bailey (deceased) and Dr. Sue Bailey. In grade school, he attended Volunteer Christian Academy, Van Buren County Middle School, and White County High School. At White County High School, he played on both state championship basketball teams as guard and tackle (guard the water bottles and tackle anyone who comes near them). His senior year, he was elected student body president.
After college, Matt taught at Van Buren County Middle School, where he coached girls basketball. He then taught at Maplewood High School, while earning a master's degree in history. In his master's program, he met his future wife, Katie. Katie and Matt have three children - Evan (nine), Colin (four), and Logan (newborn). Katie helps with the law firm and is active with special needs groups.
In law school, Matt graduated second in his class and earned eight best performance awards. His peers voted him most likely to become a professor. That's fitting given his mother was a professor at Tennessee Tech. But Matt's calling is not to become a professor. He enjoys practicing law in rural Tennessee and being a small town lawyer.
