When is a problem at school actually a child custody problem?

A sudden drop in grades. Attendance problems. Disciplinary issues. A child who no longer wants to attend their school. Or a noticeable change in behavior that seems to correspond with what is happening in one parent's home.

Not every school problem is a custody problem. But sometimes what happens in the classroom can be one of the first visible signs that something in a child's life has changed.

In this episode of The Barrows Firm Law Review Podcast, attorney Leslie Barrows discusses school problems, changing schools, parental decision-making, and child custody modification in Texas.

Who gets to decide where a child attends school? What happens when divorced parents disagree? When should parents pay attention to teachers, counselors, attendance records, grades, or disciplinary problems? What if a child wants to change schools or says they want to spend more time living with the other parent?

We also discuss when changing circumstances may justify talking with a family law attorney about modifying an existing custody arrangement and why the focus should remain on understanding what is happening with the child.

The FIFA World Cup has brought much more than international soccer to North Texas. It has given families an opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, explore unfamiliar traditions, and help children understand that the world is much larger than their normal routines.

These experiences can become valuable parenting moments. Children learn critical thinking when parents encourage them to ask questions, compare assumptions with firsthand experience, and approach unfamiliar people and ideas with curiosity rather than immediate judgment.

For divorced and separated parents, special events can also present opportunities for cooperation. A reasonable schedule exchange or clearly documented adjustment may allow a child to participate in an experience that becomes a lasting memory while protecting both parents’ relationships and parenting time.

Our latest article explores how parents can use the World Cup and other experiences outside the usual routine to raise children who are curious, adaptable, and thoughtful.
