Win of the Week: Desert Storm Vet Receives Social Security Disability Benefits
In 1992, our client was in a convoy going from Saudi Arabia to Iraq, when his truck struck an IED. Two members of his unit were killed.

He blames himself for this terrible accident and has experienced flashbacks and nightmares regarding his military experience. Crying spells, insomnia and panic attacks were common occurrences so he self-medicated with readily available drugs and alcohol. He was living in a temporary housing situation and was sometimes homeless.

He eventually sought professional treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and now his drug and alcohol addiction is in full remission. Following his service in the army as a military truck driver, he worked as a fork-lift operator.

Early in 2014, he noticed feeling weaker and stumbling on his right foot. An MRI of his spine revealed a protrusion with extensive white matter between two discs, a diagnosis consistent with multiple sclerosis. He was unable to work due to his chronic and severe PTSD, depression, arthritis of the knees, tinnitus, diabetes, degenerative disc disease of the spine and multiple sclerosis.

He applied for Social Security Disability Benefits. Although his initial application was denied, the Administrative Law Judge carefully reviewed all the facts of his case as presented by Slusky and Walt and awarded benefits, and rightfully so. His monthly social security monthly benefits along with his non-service pension from the VA will prevent another homeless situation for him.

Win of the Week: Fork Lift Operator receives benefits for a two year period following hip replacement

May 5, 2016 turned out to be a great day when our client opened his mail and read ‘The Notice of Decision’ from the Social Security Administration. It said ‘Fully Favorable’ for disability insurance benefits. Our client worked for many years as a fork lift operator until his disabling pain forced him to stop working. He underwent a hip replacement in 2012 and in 2013 he tried nerve blocks and lumbar injections which provided temporary relief of his continuing severe hip and low back pain. After many procedures and medications, his condition improved and he was able to return to work.
We processed his initial Social Security Disability application and upon being denied, we immediately requested a hearing. The administrative law judge ruled in his favor. For the period of time he was off work, he and his children received over $45,000 in back benefits. If you are unable to work for more than a year, even if you return to work, you and your family can receive substantial benefits for the period of time the wage earner was disabled.

Win of the Week: Social Security Disability approved in two months
At age 38, our client became disabled. He was confused and heard voices. His diagnosis was schizophrenia, a significant mental health problem. He was in dire straits because he could no longer work as a heating and cooling installer. He was homeless, living on food stamps and had a government issued cell phone. His therapist, paid by Medicaid, recommended that he call Slusky and Walt, specialists in mental health cases. Social Security lawyers work on a contingent fee, they get paid when a case is won.
At Slusky and Walt, we assist our clients in filing their initial application for Social Security benefits. For convenience to our clients, we will input all appropriate information into the Social Security web site. The process takes about one hour to fill out the information correctly in a detailed fashion. This comes as a welcome relief to people who are unable to perform this type of task or cannot leave their home. Our office staff can complete the Social Security application with the applicant at home while on the phone with us.
Our client was approved two months after his application was submitted. He is now able to afford housing and a structured living arrangement.

Win of the Week: $80,000 in Social Security Back Benefits
We are happy that our client R. M. of Detroit has been awarded social security benefits after his applications had been denied, twice, almost five and a half years after his first application. R.M. was assaulted while working as a bus driver for the city of Detroit. He was struck multiple times on the head and shoulder. Following the attack, he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. He felt fatigued, weak and sleep deprived due to the intrusive nightmares. He was also diagnosed with osteoarthritis and tendinopathy of his right shoulder. R.M. was awarded monthly social security benefits and Medicare in addition to receiving back benefits of over $80,000. Under certain circumstances, if you previously applied and were denied but did not appeal and you have a hearing, your lawyer can ask the judge to reopen the prior application resulting in significantly more additional back benefits. R. M.’s case was a perfect example of typical government obstacles and an excellent result.
