Jared Erekson is an associate attorney and Hundley & Harrison. He practices primarily family law and personal injury. Before becoming an attorney, Jared worked as a police officer and responded to thousands of calls for service and is intimately aware of the challenges people face in domestic issues, child abuse claims, and custody disputes. He also investigated hundreds of traffic accidents involving trucks, cars, bikes, and pedestrians. He personally knows the difficulties and injuries associated with them. Jared's experience as an officer has made him an especially effective advocate for his clients.

What a week! We have received many concerned calls from clients ranging from pending custody cases to estate plans. We have been taking every precaution to continue to provide the best legal care to our clients during this crisis.

As part of our estate planning practice, we deal with many senior citizens and their health and well-being is at the forefront of our minds. Our attorneys and staff have taken steps to optimize our social distancing while continuing to push our cases forward.

With that in mind, we want to remind all of our clients that any scheduled or potential in-person consultations may be moved to a virtual consultation through FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom.

I had a young dad call me recently telling me that, after trying to work out a child custody agreement with his ex-fiancée over their soon to be born daughter, she went AWOL for about a week. He then got an email from her saying that she had given birth (without telling him) and put the baby up for adoption. She hadn't even mentioned this to him as a possibility, and it was already done. He was frantic and asked me if there was anything I could do to get his daughter back. Unfortunately, Utah is REALLY hard on unmarried dads. To protect your rights as a father and to prevent this kind of adoption, you have to take steps BEFORE the baby is born. If you wait until even one day after the baby is born, you can forever lose your rights as a father, even if the mom hides the birth, or flat out lies about the adoption. I have a really hard time understanding a mother who actively hides this from the dad, but it is completely legal and it happens in Utah all the time. If you are an unmarried dad, with a baby on the way, DON'T WAIT! Take steps as soon as possible, and before the baby is born to make sure your rights are protected!
