One mistake we see too often is people that finally pay off a credit card, only to immediately close the account.

It feels like the right move—but it can actually make maintaining or rebuilding your credit much harder.

After all, closing an older credit card can shorten your credit history and increase your credit utilization, both of which can lower your credit score.

So if the card doesn't have an annual fee, it's often better to keep it open, use it occasionally for a small purchase, and pay it off in full each month.

Or, if that becomes too difficult to do, an alternative option is cutting up your card but keeping the account open.

Because when you're working your way out of debt, every financial decision matters.
