Earlier this week, an unknown person contacted a Penngrove couple and told them their loved one had been arrested and needed money for bail. A short time later, an Uber driver showed up at the couple's house and took the money to be delivered.

Later that same day, the couple was contacted again and told their loved one needed more money. Fortunately, the couple contacted the Sheriff's Office for help. We were able to help the couple and told them they were the victims of a scam.

Unfortunately, these types of scams are becoming more commonplace. If someone calls you and tells you they represent a courthouse, jail, or police department demanding money for a loved one, it is most likely a scam. These folks prey on people's familial instincts to help their loved ones to take your money. If you receive this type of call and you're skeptical, try calling your loved one, their friends, or people you may know together. Also, ask the person calling who they work for, research the telephone number for that agency on your own, and contact that agency directly. Many agencies will also list inmates in their jails on their department websites. Government agencies will also never send someone in person to collect cash as payment for anything, especially bail.

As always, if you think the call you received is suspicious, contact the Sheriff's Office or your local law enforcement agency for help.
