"Black Lives Matter" is really about abuse of authority; and although black lives are particularly threatened by it, it affects everyone. And no where is this worse than behind prison walls. "Black Lives Matter" emerged because people were able to videotape police brutality. But the same goes on behind prison walls everyday, and inmates end up getting punished for it, as guards close ranks around the abuser and orchestrate narratives of inmate misbehavior. Inmate witnesses who squeal get targeted by the officers or other inmates the officers bribe. Then, the legislature and courts have set up all kinds of limits on liability to shield them from paying for their crimes.

Add to this the fact that most lawyers won't touch prison cases. Clients usually can't pay; Defendants won't settle; juries have anti-prisoner bias; and even statutory attorneys fees get minimized due to legislative efforts to squelch prisoner litigation. The not-for-profit system cannot come close to keeping up with the abuse that needs to be fought. If you are a lawyer and you care about stopping abuse by police - contact me and take a case.

Today I got a call from a client in prison who had been waiting for cortisone shots to treat spinal disease for months. All I had to do was a send a letter to the prison medical department threatening a lawsuit. This is not the first time I've had miracle results like this. The prison medical system can be totally careless and cruel to its patients because the law makes it too difficult to sue them for it at a profit. And if you think "well, I don't care, they are in prison because they are bad people," keep in mind that the majority of people in prison are there because of drug addiction. The prison medical system doesn't care if you got caught with an ounce of he**in or killed three people - it treats everyone with the same disregard. If your firm can take on a pro bono prison medical advocacy case, please let me know. I have many for whom some phone calls and a letter could make a huge difference.
