Here’s an idea if you suddenly come into money and can direct it to somewhere other than bills…..and it can be a way to teach your kids how to retire comfortably. If they have ANY reportable income get them to open up a ROTH IRA….you can then fund it with your dollars up to THEIR LIMIT…each persons limit depends on specific factors that change frequently so check ROTH IRA limits for that year. Provided you have the funds th address would be their top limit and THEY qualify to fund a ROTH IRA, you can fund their account with your $$$…..Then, when they’re ready to retire they’ll have a tidy sum due to the impressive power of compound interest. You can open a ROTH IRA at Fidelity, Merrill Lynch…etc or any bank or brokerage. Choice of investments inside the IRA is up to you and your child. If you start kids in the stock market young, this can be a teaching tool. At 16 or so, it’s not “too soon”.

I often suggest a great way to make your kids rich without having to leave them all your savings. It relies upon a length of time to build up their wealth…starting with the very first year a worker has income reported to the Treasury (IRS)….once a person has reported income from employment (W-2 or 1099)….he or she can within limits, fund his own ROTH IRA!!! And parents or grandparents can provide the $$…up to federal limits based on earnings and age. This fund can build up year on year and be invested in the stock market, growing in leaps and bounds by the time she retires. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS! You won’t be sorry…and your kids will thank you for saving for THEIR RETIREMENT long before they’d otherwise consider even thinking about it!!
