Is Your Estate Plan Still Working for You?
You made a smart move when you created your estate plan. But here's something many people don't realize: an estate plan isn't a "set it and forget it" document. Life changes β and when it does, your plan may need to change too. If you haven't reviewed your will, trust, power of attorney, or healthcare proxy in the past few years, now is a great time to take a second look.
Life events that may signal it's time for a review:
β
You've gotten married, divorced, or remarried
β
You've had children or grandchildren β or they've had children
β
A named beneficiary or executor has passed away or is no longer the right choice
β
Your financial picture has changed significantly (inheritance, property purchase, business sale)
β
You've moved to a new state
β
A loved one is now dealing with health issues, addiction, or financial challenges
β
Tax laws or Medicaid rules have changed
β
Your relationship with a named agent or trustee has changed
Even if none of these apply, a general review every 3β5 years is good practice. An outdated plan can create unintended consequences β including assets going to the wrong people or a loved one being unable to act on your behalf when it matters most.
At Fratello Law, our estate planning attorneys are happy to sit down with you, review what you have, and make sure everything still reflects your wishes and works the way you intend.
