🏛️ Protecting Nursing Home Residents Starts With Knowing Their Rights.

Yesterday, attorney Barry G. Doyle took that message to the Kane County Bar Association, speaking with attorneys and judges about nursing home abuse, neglect, and the legal protections available to Illinois residents.

His presentation explored some of the most serious issues families can face, including preventable falls, pressure injuries, medication errors, inadequate supervision, and failures to recognize changes in a resident's condition.

But the conversation went beyond individual injuries. Barry also discussed how nursing home care plans, facility records, and accountability play an important role in understanding what went wrong.

💙 Every nursing home resident deserves dignity, safety, and appropriate care. Continuing to educate the legal community is one way we can help protect those rights.

Thank you to the Kane County Bar Association for the opportunity!

What happens when a settlement is reached but the money is never paid?

Attorney Barry Doyle discusses a legal dispute involving the operators of Niles Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where a judgment creditor filed an action to collect after a settlement allegedly went unpaid.

The case raises questions about unpaid judgments, foreclosure proceedings, and the financial issues involving nursing home operators in Illinois.

The people behind a nursing home near you could be facing legal challenges you know nothing about.

Fall Risk #5: Medications 💊

Could your loved one’s medications be increasing their risk of falling in a nursing home?

Certain cardiac, psychiatric, and pain medications can cause dizziness, sedation, poor balance, and other side effects. Taking multiple medications at the same time can make those problems even more complicated.

Attorney Barry G. Doyle explains why medication use is an important factor to examine after a nursing home fall. Including what the facility did to recognize and address those risks.

Fall Risk #4: Incontinence

Incontinence can create a serious fall risk for nursing home residents.

A resident who suddenly needs to use the bathroom may try to get up quickly rather than wait for help. Others may attempt to clean themselves after an accident and lose their balance in the process.

That’s why incontinence is one of the important factors nursing homes should consider when evaluating a resident’s fall risk and planning for their safety.

If your loved one suffered a serious fall in an Illinois nursing home and you have questions about the care they received, Safe Nursing Home Advocates can help.

A nursing home resident’s condition can change quickly.

Nurses are often the “eyes and ears” of the doctor. They don’t have to diagnose the problem but they do need to recognize when something has changed. Notify the physician, and provide accurate information so the resident can get the care they need.

When those warning signs are missed or communication is delayed, serious conditions like a UTI can progress into a medical emergency such as septic shock.

Barry explains the important role nursing home nurses play when a resident’s condition changes.

Fall Risk #3: History of Recent Falls

One fall can increase the risk of another. After a fall, nursing home residents may lose confidence, become less active, and experience further physical decline — especially when recovering from an injury.

A history of recent falls is an important warning sign that should be considered when planning a resident’s care.
