Maddy has a natural way of making people feel welcome. She’s quick to jump in wherever she’s needed, isn’t afraid to tackle something new, and brings an upbeat attitude to the office that our team appreciates just as much as our clients do. We're celebrating an exciting milestone for our Legal Intern, Karena Verbitsky, who recently made her first court appearance via Zoom at a hearing in Brown County, where her motion was granted.

Reflecting on the experience, Karena shared:

Strong nonprofits require strong leadership and a willingness to ask difficult questions.

Recently, Alex Halbach, partner and co-founder of Halbach|Szwarc Law Firm, joined Anne Rieck-McFarland to lead a discussion on nonprofit sustainability, governance, and long-term organizational success. Through his work counseling businesses and nonprofit organizations on strategic, regulatory, and governance matters, and through his service on community and nonprofit boards, Alex has seen firsthand the importance of organizations adapting to meet changing needs while remaining focused on their mission.

One topic generated meaningful conversation: whether collaboration, consolidation, or other structural changes can sometimes help nonprofits operate more efficiently and better serve their missions.

Alee recently completed her first court appearance using her practice certificate and had the opportunity to speak on behalf of a client, an experience she described as a dream come true after years of hard work and schooling. She also discovered something many new attorneys learn along the way: stepping into the courtroom wasn't nearly as scary as she thought it would be.

We're passionate about creating opportunities for the next generation of legal professionals to learn, grow, and gain real-world experience. Watching moments like this is one of the best parts of what we do.

A significant victory was recently affirmed by the South Dakota Supreme Court.

The case involved criminal charges arising from conduct charged by South Dakota, but alleged to have occurred on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River. Attorney Jacklyn Fox played an integral role in litigating the matter at the trial court level against the Attorney General's Office. Through the efforts of Attorney Fox and Attorney John Hines of Crary Huff, the criminal charges were successfully dismissed.

The Attorney General's Office appealed that dismissal, but the South Dakota Supreme Court affirmed the lower court's ruling, leaving the dismissal intact.

A great result and an important decision regarding the limits of South Dakota's criminal jurisdiction.
