Product placement occurs when a product is placed in a video (TV, film, music video, etc.), song, event or other consumer-facing interface. Product placement typically involves a transaction where there is an established brand in play.

This may occur when a video producer is going through licensing and clearance procedures, where they must request a license to use the product in their media, or when a growing brand pays a fee to have their product placed. This could mean a mention in a song and/or a video of an artist, or in a TV episode or a scene in a film.

A few examples of companies who've blown up and maintained their position through product placement:

Nike, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Ford, etc.

This is smart business and offers an opportunity for revenue growth to both the creators and the businesses.

Vice has just reported that the UK’s Metropolitan Police and YouTube seem to be working in collaboration in that almost 97% of the Met takedown requests for rap and drill music videos have been granted.  

In 2021, 510 music videos were referred for takedowns (a 300% increase from 125 requests in 2020) by the Metropolitan Police, of which 96.7% were taken down.

The focus on drill music is part of a UK program, beginning in 2015, entitled Operation Domain, involving a dedicated YouTube police team.  This is not unlike similar programs in US police departments.  The UK Metropolitan Police/YouTube interface is described by the police as a “collaboration” and “enhanced partnership working”.

The relationship between art and censorship is often a key indicator of the nature of a society, both in terms of progressive and conservative notions, as well as in terms of the waxing and waning of a culture.

A Digital Streaming Platform (DSP) is a platform used to distribute music, movies, tv shows and other streamable content directly to consumers on behalf of creators for the purpose of streaming the music by consumers.

With respect to music, DSPs have rapidly become the primary medium of music distribution after replacing traditional physical outlets (e.g., stores, etc.). The internet's ability to increase access to media, coupled with the widespread use of cellphones and other internet-based media devices has outstripped physical outlets.

Music DSP examples include, Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, Pandora, and Amazon Music.

OTT stands for Over The Top. OTT is an internet-based distribution method similar to, but distinct from, VOD.

OTT platforms allow users to stream live video, similar to traditional TV, but they do not incorporate user downloads or storage of content by users like VOD . Rather, the content is accessed live through the internet (rather than cable or satellite) and streamed on your device. Content cannot be accessed after the live.

OTT content is not limited to video. It can also include podcasts and other audio.

Device ex. Smart TVs, Apple TVs, and Amazon Firesticks, etc.

Platform ex. HBO Now, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Video, SlingTV, YouTube, etc.

VOD stands for Video On Demand. VOD is a popular distribution format, which allows users to access a collection of videos at any time thus, "on demand".

This includes services such as, Xfinity On Demand, HBO Max, Netflix, Hulu, etc. The method by which users are able to access the content is generally defined by the method of payment.

Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) - subscribe to play
ex. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max

Transactional Video On Demand (TVOD) - pay per play
ex. Amazon Rent or Buy, Apple iTunes, Sky Box Office

Advertising-Based Video On Demand (AVOD) - watch ads
ex. YouTube, Hulu, etc.

A bankable minimum guarantee (bankable MG) is a highly useful mechanism producers can use to a finance film project and generate fees regardless of its performance.

The bankable MG comes into play during development. Upon securing interest in a concept, a studio may execute a bankable MG with the producer. This is a signed agreement stating the studio's promise to purchase a license (or the entire copyright) for the finished product at a specific dollar amount. It will most likely include quality, personnel, and other requirements that the producer must meet in order to receive the funds.

The producer must then secure financing from a private investor or bank. The bank will use the "bankable" MG as evidence that the producer is a qualified borrower.
