On February 14th, President Biden announced that the U.S. will defer for 18-months the removal of any Palestinian, subject to some exceptions. This is known as a program of deferred enforced departure (DED). It is similar to Temporary Protected Status (TPS), except that it is not based in regulation but, rather, is an executive action. DED was ordered for Palestinians to provide some relief for those in the US facing dire humanitarian conditions in Palestine.

As individuals pursue immigration to new countries, their online footprint can significantly impact their prospects. In an important human rights victory, Christian González Chacón, along with his colleague Alfredo Ortega Franco, recently represented the president-elect and vice president-elect of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, and Karin Herrera Aguilar, before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. They successfully secured a favorable decision on precautionary measures after demonstrating that there were two plots to threaten the lives of these individuals.

The IACHR ordered the Guatemalan State to adopt all necessary measures to protect the life and personal integrity of the president-elect and vice president-elect. Additionally, they instructed the State to investigate the origins of the criminal plans to threaten the lives of the beneficiaries. The resolution can be found here: res_48-23_mc_574-23 _gt_es.pdf (oas.org).

This summer, GYH’s International Protection practice eagerly welcomed Attorney Christian Gonzalez Chacon, who brings more than a decade of experience as a human rights advocate, having worked with prominent international human rights organizations and tribunals.

Earlier this week GYH Attorneys Becki Young, Meg Hobbins, and Sofia Hassander presented a webinar detailing the immigrant and nonimmigrant visa options available to professionals in the golf industry - including players, trainers, caddies, and beyond. Of course, these visa options are available to a variety of athletes, professionals, and students. This webinar covers: B, E, F, H, O, P visas and green cards, issues with inadmissibility, and other complex immigration situations.

This is the first in a series of webinars for the golf industry. Email [email protected] to be notified of future webinars.
