We've been working with a lot of creative clients lately at HMLG, and I keep thinking about this photo.

This was taken back when I worked at a club, years before law school.

I didn't know it at the time, but that's where I first learned creative work and business terms are never really separate.

The music was happening either way, but right alongside it were all these questions; who owned the name, who owned the recording versus who owned the song underneath it, who got paid if any of it took off. All of that was tangled up with the creative side the whole time.

That's still exactly the work. It's just gaming studios, apparel brands, and filmmakers now instead of bands, and the contracts have gotten a lot longer.

Talking to Megan Jasper of Sub Pop about this made me think about how my own firm ended up looking the way it does. I didn’t set out to build an all women team. It just kept happening because I kept hiring good people, and it turned out a lot of the good people were women.

HMLG is actually certified as a Women’s Business Enterprise through WBENC now. I don’t talk about it much because it’s not really the point of the firm, the work is the point.

I think that’s the same thing Megan was describing. Not a mission, just a habit of saying yes that adds up to something over time.

We were just talking about how cool this project was in the office. This is from As Many Weirdos As Possible (), a project documenting the Pacific Northwest late '80s and '90s music scene through a portrait paired with a handwritten note from each person.

What I love about a project like this is the idea that a single image and a few handwritten lines can hold onto something that would otherwise just disappear. I think about that a lot in my current work too. So much of what I do is about making sure a client's story, their rights, and their ownership actually survives on paper, not just in memory.

You don’t have to be planning an exit to benefit from being exit-ready.

Nicole Donnelly didn’t think she would ever sell her company, but stayed organized as if a buyer could show up tomorrow.

Getting your documents, contracts, and structure in order before you need them (or even if you think you’ll never need them) is what makes a fast, clean deal possible.

This is me and Tom () of Triple Squirrels and EVGRN (), mid recording session, cables and mic stands everywhere. I love working with people who are building something in film and entertainment. Every project in this space looks different, but the thing I never get tired of is being close enough to the process to actually understand what someone's trying to make before we get anywhere near paperwork.

More on how we support film and entertainment clients is at hmlglaw.com.

I ask every founder some version of the same question, what actually was the hardest part of getting started, and after years as a startup lawyer, the answers still surprise me. Jill Angelo’s cut right to fundraising. Her words stuck with me: you have to learn by doing, and when you have to learn by doing, you fail a lot first. It took her a long time to bring in any investment at all.

That’s the part of the story that never makes it onto a pitch deck, and it’s usually because a founder needs someone in their corner who’s done this before, not after the round closes, while they’re still in the failing-a-lot part.
