Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the Indigenous peoples who have called this land home since time immemorial and whose leadership continues to shape Oregon.
For nearly 20 years, I’ve worked as an attorney advocating for Indigenous rights and Tribal sovereignty, and during that time, I had the privilege of serving as Chief Judge of the Warm Springs Court of Appeals. When I was elected to the Oregon Senate, the first bill my office passed was SB 1011, which we developed alongside the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to uphold Tribal sovereignty.
Thank you to our Tribal partners for the leadership you bring to our shared work. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together and I look forward to continuing that work together for Oregon’s people and lands.

The Washington State Supreme Court's recent letter addressing Indigenous dehumanization looms large this election season.

Supreme Court candidate David Stevens "said he objected to two open letters the court wrote — one in 2020 addressing institutional racism and one this summer addressing discrimination against tribal communities — and likely wouldn’t have signed them.

'I think it’s performative,' he said. 'What legal function does it do?'"

King County Superior Court Judge and Supreme Court Candidate Jamie Hawk "said she appreciated the letters, and the court’s proactive push to address the legal system’s history of discrimination, and would have signed them.

'It’s really kind of a call to action for the legal community to be mindful about the impacts and harms of racial injustice,' she said. Lawyers have repeatedly cited the 2020 letter in arguments to the court. 'I generally think that those letters have been helpful and encouraged the legal community to look at those issues and to take action.'"

Both candidates are judges, but one admires Ruth Bader Ginsberg and the other Clarence Thomas. One is supported by Democrats and the other by Republicans.

"This summer, the court wrote another open letter to Northwest tribes and the legal community, urging courts and lawyers to 'confront and rectify the historical and ongoing dehumanization of Indigenous people.'

'We also call upon the bench and bar to actively address incorrect and harmful precedent, acknowledge conscious and unconscious bias, and change our judicial system to reflect a just reality for our Indigenous communities,' the unanimous court, Justice Colleen Melody included, wrote."

Justice Colleen Melody is a civil rights lawyer and former aide to Gov. Bob Ferguson. Her opponent, Scott Edwards, has tried to block progressive taxes.

Ryan Dreveskracht has filed a federal wrongful-death lawsuit on behalf of the mother of a man who died from self-inflicted injuries while in custody at the Whatcom County Jail. His death was preventable.
