Washington doesn't recognize common law marriage—but that doesn't mean unmarried couples don't have legal rights.

If a relationship qualifies as a Committed Intimate Relationship (CIR), Washington courts may divide property when it ends. However, a CIR is not the same as a divorce.

Helping a parent with estate planning can be an act of love. But if you stand to benefit, your involvement can create unintended legal risks.

When a child helps a parent change a will, beneficiary designation, or make a substantial gift, other family members may later claim undue influence—even when the child’s intentions were good.

The safest approach? Support the process without controlling it.

✔️ Let your parent choose their own attorney
✔️ Give them privacy with counsel
✔️ Avoid drafting documents or handling signatures
✔️ Keep clear records of financial transactions
✔️ Be especially cautious if you serve as an attorney-in-fact, trustee, caregiver, or joint account holder

An unequal inheritance isn’t automatically improper. What matters is whether the plan reflects your parent’s independent wishes.

Today we send our 1L summer intern, Eden Iazeolla, back to the University of Washington School of Law as her summer with Lasher comes to an end.

We asked Eden what stood out most about her time with us, and her answer was a great reminder of what makes a summer at Lasher special:

Real-world experience: From drafting a reply and filing it all in one day to working on a full prenuptial agreement, Eden got hands-on experience across multiple areas of law.

A little fun, too: One of her favorite moments was an “epic” evening sailing the Sound with Lasher associates and staff.

And the people: What surprised her most was how welcoming everyone was. “Everyone has made a considerable effort to integrate me into the Lasher family,” she said.

Eden, we’ve loved having you with us! Best of luck with your second year of law school—we can’t wait to see what’s next. 🎓

Today, we said “Happy Retirement!” to Linda Erickson, one of our longtime paralegals and a beloved member of the Lasher team for more than 20 years.

Ask anyone who worked with Linda, and you’ll hear the same things: calm, dependable, helpful, and always ready to jump in with a can-do attitude. She was the kind of teammate who made everyone around her better—and her willingness to help was noticed, valued and deeply appreciated.

Linda has given more than two decades to Lasher, and now it’s time for her to give some of that time back to herself. ❤️

We’ll certainly miss her presence around the office, but we’re even more excited for all that comes next.

Congratulations, Linda! Here’s to a wonderful, well-earned retirement and all the adventures ahead.
