SGB is proud to congratulate 15 SGB attorneys named to the 2026 Washington Super Lawyers list!

Rebecca Roe and Lindsay Halm were named to the Super Lawyers “Top 100” list, and both attorneys, along with Elizabeth Hanley, were also recognized among the “Top 50 Women” lawyers in Washington.

Five SGB attorneys were named to this year's Rising Stars list, an honor limited to attorneys age 40 or younger or in practice for 10 years or less. Andy Boes, Kaitlin Cherf, Diego Rondon Ichikawa, Chen-Chen Jiang and Carson Phillips-Spotts were among the 2.5% of attorneys in Washington selected in 2026.

Super Lawyers recognizes attorneys through peer nomination, independent research and peer evaluation, with only 5% of attorneys in each state selected annually.

Join us in congratulating Schroeter Goldmark & Bender’s newest shareholders, Carson Phillips-Spotts and Andy Boes!

The Washington State Supreme Court ruled that Washington State University (WSU) owes a duty of care to protect students from foreseeable dangers of fraternity hazing – a landmark decision in the case of Sam Martinez, a WSU freshman who died while pledging his fraternity in 2019.

This ruling affirms the Court of Appeals’ decision that WSU's relationship with its recognized fraternities and sororities can create a legal duty to protect students from foreseeable harm, marking the first time Washington's highest court has recognized this duty for universities.

Now, the case will go back to trial, where it will be reconsidered under this new standard.

SGB's Becky Roe, Sims Weymuller, Chen-Chen Jiang and Sergio Garcidueñas-Sease represent Sam's family alongside co-counsel Jon Fazzola and Valerie Davis McOmie.

SGB has opened a new office in Richland, WA, expanding access to its over 55-year history of representing groups of people in complex cases and bringing that experience closer to home for survivors of abuse by Dr. Mark Mulholland, a Tri-Cities OB-GYN.

Attorney Elizabeth Hanley represents many women against Mulholland, an OB-GYN who worked for Providence St. Joseph Health and Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington, from 1999 through June 2025.

ProPublica and KUOW Public Radio continue to investigate how the Washington Medical Commission has responded to decades of complaints against doctors, including Tri-Cities OB-GYN Dr. Mark Mulholland.

The reporting details that the commission has repeatedly failed to meet its legal obligation to notify the public, a pattern a state legislator says amounts to noncompliance with the law.

Cases against Dr. Mulholland are central to the investigation. The commission waited six weeks to announce charges against him, and at least one patient alleges she was abused during that gap.

SGB attorney Julie Kline is featured in today's The Seattle Times discussing the newly filed wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of Sung Kwon, whose wife, Eina Kwon, and unborn daughter, Evelyn, were killed in a 2023 shooting in Belltown.

The lawsuit alleges that the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (RHA) failed to act despite repeated warning signs that the gunman, who was a supportive housing program participant and receiving case management from RHA, was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and posed a danger to others.

The lawsuit seeks accountability for the alleged failures that led to this tragedy and raises important questions about the responsibilities of agencies providing care to individuals in crisis.
