As it gets hotter and dryer, we all become more uneasy about devastating wildfires. A small investment of time can make a huge difference! Here are three tips to become wildfire season ready:
1. Define Your Defensible Space
Create 30-100 feet of fire-resistant space around your home “ignition zone”. Clear away any dead trees, fallen limbs, leaves, pine needles, and pinecones. Irrigating the trees, shrubs, and plants goes a long way to keeping them healthy and less likely to burn.
2. Choose Fire Resistant Materials
Use fire resistant roofing, siding, decking, and fencing materials throughout your property – including your lawn furniture. Installing 1/8” metal mesh screening on all vents in the eaves and the spark arrestors on chimneys will help keep embers or flammable debris from entering the home.
3. Have A Plan of Action
Keep a ‘Go-Bag’ handy and know the evacuation routes from your neighborhood. Go over your plan of action regularly using a checklist of what to do before leaving. Don’t forget about your pets! Make your home’s address sign clearly visible so emergency personnel can find your home quickly. If they can’t find you, they can’t help you!
