About a year ago, I launched my professional social media accounts for my business. Initially, I was apprehensive—I didn’t use TikTok and was unfamiliar with Instagram reels. In my personal life, I preferred staying away from social media, seeing it as a positive choice. However, when I started my law firm, I knew organic outreach was crucial due to limited marketing funds. Despite my fears, I took the plunge and began posting.

With the positive feedback and business growth came the challenges of social media. Opening myself to the public also meant being vulnerable to criticism. One comment early on deeply affected me. Someone remarked on a photo, insinuating I was stuck-up and materialistic, citing my alleged designer sandals. This criticism troubled me, causing me to question whether to continue with social media and revealing that perhaps my resilience wasn’t as strong as I thought.

The sandals in question were not designer or expensive; they were a pair I had bought for $20 and worn for three years until they were worn out (the sandals pictured above). This incident serves as a reminder that we shouldn’t judge others without knowing their stories. It also symbolizes my journey of confronting fears and embracing vulnerability in my professional life. Today, I toss away the sandals, but keep the lessons.
