⚓On this Memorial Day, as we honor the men and women who sacrificed so much for our country and our freedom, I am incredibly moved to share a remarkable piece of our own local history. I recently had the distinct honor of representing a longtime Sausalito family in the sale of their home—a property that has stayed in their family for over 70 years. As they prepare for their next chapter, they chose to gift the City of Sausalito (through me) a collection of historical "treasures," including this incredible commemorative booklet produced right here in the 1940s.These pages highlight the monumental effort behind the shipyard. On March 31, 1944, the delivery of the SS Mission San Luis Rey (Yard Hull "Number 35") broke records, delivering four tankers in a single month and bringing the coveted National Tanker Champ Flag home to Marinship! 🏆While the shipbuilders took center stage, it truly took an entire nation to build these titans. This booklet honors the massive network of local sub-contractors and nationwide vendors—from Plant Rubber & Asbestos in San Francisco to General Electric in New York—who united to make Sausalito a world-class wartime powerhouse. Some fun local Sausalito History!

I recently listed a home on Crescent Avenue that was constructed by my client’s grandparents in 1948. The property has remained within the family since its inception, with continuous occupancy by relatives throughout the years. Roy and Cynthia Stram designed the residence to accommodate Roy’s limited mobility, ensuring convenient access with a level street entrance from the garage directly to the main living quarters. The couple relocated from LaFayette, where their only child Gerald (Jerry) Eugene Stram was born. Cynthia was the only child of Carlotta Monterey O’Neill, the third wife of the most famous American playwright, Eugene O’Neill. Carlotta was a well-known actress and Miss California in 1919. When Carlotta and Eugene moved to California and built the Tao House in Danville, Cynthia frequently resided with them and assisted Eugene by typing revisions to his plays. The Tao House in Danville is now recognized as a national historic site, preserving the legacy of Eugene O’Neill’s significant contributions to American literature. https://eugeneoneill.org/about-us/history/eugene-oneill/

There is also much local family history with Cynthia’s biological grandfather, Melvin C. Chapman, serving as the Mayor of Oakland in the 1890’s and very prominent attorney of his time. Cynthia Jane Chapman met Roy Stram during a transatlantic voyage. Roy worked as a purser for Dollar Steam Ships at the time. Their home contains extensive libraries inherited from previous generations. Many of these volumes, bearing Carlotta and Eugene O’Neill’s personal library stamps, have been donated to Sausalito’s Friends of the Library and will be available for purchase. Personal items passed down through the family are currently offered for sale at https://www.tivolidecor.com/ on Caledonia Street, with new pieces added regularly. Jerry Stram and his wife Maxey were esteemed members of the Sausalito community, actively involved in the Art Festival, Lions Club, and remembered fondly by all who knew them. Jerry delivered newspapers in Sausalito between 1950 and 1953, while Cynthia was employed by the Marin IJ from 1951 to 1954. Jerry was a rabid sports enthusiast, particularly the 49ers, having season tickets for over 25 years.

The PBA Auction house in Berkeley will soon feature the Eugene O’Neill collection, including author’s copies of his most renowned works and several personal items, including his silver handled engraved cane.

It is my privilege to represent this distinguished family in the sale of their cherished home. Maintaining much of its original condition, the residence has endured over time and is situated on a desirable south-facing lot offering panoramic views of San Francisco, parking, and a level entry.
