It is so sad to see all of the videos and photos of storm damage to people's homes. A friend of mine that specializes in property damage claims sent me the following bullet points to follow after a storm. Feel free to share and message me with any questions.
Flood Insurance Claims –
-As soon as you notice ANY damage, file a claim.
NOTE, for damage caused by flood—you must have separate flood insurance from your homeowners insurance, even if the flood or storm surge was caused by a hurricane.
-TAKE PHOTOS OF EVERYTHING.
-Take any reasonable measures that you can to mitigate further damage (this may include boarding broken windows, looking into dry-out services, etc).
-Do not do any substantive repairs before the carrier’s adjuster has had an opportunity to inspect your property.
While this would make sense, insurance carriers will often point to this as you prejudicing their investigation into your claim if done prior to their initial inspection.
-When the adjuster comes to inspect your property, ask them to inspect interior AND exterior. Offer them access to entire property.
-They will want you to provide a Sworn Proof of Loss (if they do not offer you one, ask for one immediately).
-It’s important to have an estimate of your total damages to attach and to the Sworn Proof of Loss and use as the basis for your claim, call us immediately to assist with getting experts out there who can prepare an accurate measure of damages to ensure that you’re getting compensated as fairly and as fast as possible.
Homeowners Insurance Claims –
-As soon as you notice ANY damage, file a claim.
-TAKE PHOTOS OF EVERYTHING.
-Take any reasonable measures that you can to mitigate further damage (this may include tarping the roof, boarding broken windows, etc).
-Do not do any substantive repairs before the carrier’s adjuster has had an opportunity to inspect your property.
While this would make sense, insurance carrier’s will often point to this as you prejudicing their investigation if done prior to their inspection and deny these areas that you repaired.
-When the adjuster comes to inspect your property, ask them to inspect interior AND exterior. Offer them access to entire property.
-Keep ANY AND ALL receipts for repairs done toward your damages.
-The carrier has sixty days from the day you make a claim to make a coverage determination (they will open coverage on or deny your claim).
-If they have not provided you with notice of their coverage determination within sixty days from the date you made the claim, or they wrongfully deny/underpay you, contact me ASAP!
