Video from today. The destruction of turtle nests and habitat here was foreseeable and avoidable. Sea wall permits prohibit sea wall owners, builders and designers from destroying turtle habitat, neighbors’ property, and public beach access. Community residents are encouraged to call your state and Sarasota County representatives at 941-861-5000. Let them know you support strong enforcement of Florida and Sarasota laws and policies reflected in the coastal armoring permit conditions here. Immediate mitigation can be ordered by state and county officials to prevent further destruction down the beach, where turtle nests have not yet been destroyed. Of course, no new walls should be considered until this wall is addressed and the down-beach damage is remediated by those responsible.
A domino effect of coastal erosion along North Manasota Key is washing away sea turtle nests and threatening homes, leaving residents and experts asking for natural solutions over man-made structures of sea walls. FOX 13's Kimberly Kuizon reports.
