Thank you to the Seattle Times for covering the story of our client, Sally Brownfield, who was disenrolled from the Squaxin Island Tribe in Washington. Credit goes to the Tribe for maintaining a judicial system that allows disenrollees to appeal. That process is still underway for Ms. Brownfield. Mctlaw attorney Kehl Van Winkle has filed his briefing and will deliver oral argument before the Tribal Court on August 26.

Sally Brownfield was part of the Squaxin Island Tribe for decades. This spring, the small tribe near Olympia disenrolled her and dozens of other people. “It’s incredibly emotional,” a tribal member says.

On August 7, 2025, attorneys and paralegals from mctlaw took part in a training hosted by the U.S. Court of Federal Claims Bar Association. The session focused on how lawyers can request that the government pay their clients’ legal fees after winning certain types of cases in the Court of Federal Claims.

This kind of reimbursement is allowed under special laws known as “fee-shifting statutes.” The training helped legal teams learn the best way to apply for those fees so their clients don’t have to carry the full cost of taking legal action.
