“In 1939, more than 900 Jewish refugees aboard the MS St. Louis sailed to Cuba, and then the United States, seeking safety from N**i persecution,” said Naomi Steinberg, Vice President of U.S. Policy and Advocacy at HIAS, which filed an amicus brief in the Al Otro Lado case. “They were turned away two times. Ultimately, more than one-third of the passengers on that boat were killed in the Holocaust. HIAS was there. Then, when the Trump administration set up its own turnback policies, HIAS was there again, serving people who were stranded in Mexico. We know these stories intimately. The turnback of the St. Louis and the turnbacks at the U.S.-Mexico border, at their core, have one chilling thing in common, which is the denial of the right to seek safety.”

As the nation approaches the July 4th celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, join NorCal Public Media, VIDAS, and community partners for a special screening of “Arrivals,” the immigration episode from Generations: California @ 250.

This evening offers a way to mark this historic moment by looking honestly at the realities of our nation — through the lens of truth, justice, immigration, belonging, family, and community.

The screening will be followed by a community conversation about immigrant rights, public media, and the stories that help us better understand who we are and who we aspire to be.

Proceeds support VIDAS — Vital Immigrant Defense Advocacy and Services and Northern California Public Media.

An evening of film, conversation, community, truth, and justice.

Well-deserved CONGRATS to our own Board Treasurer and champion, Charlotte Radmilovic, for being a recipient of North Bay Business Journal's 2026 Influential Women Award! We also want to extend our congrats to Dr. Mariana Martinez of Graton Day Labor Center (Centro Laboral de Graton) and the other phenomenal women recognized in our community! 🦋

Charlotte Radmilovic rose to chief financial officer before age 40 and now serves as senior vice president and CFO at Exchange Bank, where she is known for translating complex financial strategy into growth.

We are witnessing this every day. It's not making headline news, but the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) is issuing mind boggling decisions every day that obliterate due process, make a mockery of our judicial system system, and dehumanize people in every way. The stakes could not be higher for those impacted by these decisions and we need a regime change now.🦋
