RENT GOUGING PROHIBITED IN EMERGENCY - The Governor's Office has declared a state of emergency due to intense rains and flooding. California law prohibits rent increases greater than 10% for 30 days after ab emergency declaration. Our hearts go out to Pajaro residents who were forced to evacuate flooded homes. The LA Times reported this weekend that the Army Corps of Engineers has for decades known about the inadequacy of the levee system protecting that community, but that the community was essentially too poor to justify levee improvements. As climate change intensifies, it is poor communities who will continue to suffer the greatest impacts.

When you assert your rights, things turn out better! Evelyn stuck to their guns and received their entire deposit back.

Tenants in California are supposed to receive security deposits within 21 days of move out. Generally, a property owner can only hold your deposit for unpaid rent, excessive damage to the home, or for cleaning to the same level of cleanliness at the start of your tenancy. Other uses like utilities, "normal wear and tear" repair, or "just because" are not allowed!
