Unlike humans, “the shorebirds and the plovers view the dog as a predator. The birds will react to a dog from a much greater distance than people.”

The wildlife ecologist also points out that the snowy plover is not the only species that could potentially benefit from a restriction on off-leash dogs.

Many aren't happy about proposed on-leash dog restrictions at Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and more, but the alternative could spell trouble for endangered birds.

Santa Cruz is dog heaven! We have 260,000+ human beings in Santa Cruz County, and over 50,000 dogs, by estimate of the County Animal Shelter. And that's on a weekday in the wintertime. On we...

Research tabled at the recent Shorebird Conference in Darwin has shown that it is virtually impossible to keep dogs within a designated off-leash zone. To test those claims we recently visited randomly for the first time the dog off-leash area at Nudgee Beach, which is not far from Sandgate. There was only one dog within the designated off-leash zone, but plenty of dogs off-leash outside this zone.

Hence, this proofs without any doubt, that creating a designated dog off-leash zone does simply not work.

However, Victoria Newton, our local councillor who is actively supporting a dog-off leash area at Brighton, does not seem to be aware about this.

At the 4456 meeting of the Brisbane City Council, on Tuesday 9 December 2014 she claims:

"I just want to point out that other local governments seem to find a way to cater for responsible dog owners on the beach. In St Kilda, Bribie Island, Southport, Coolum, Noosa, Palm Beach, Sunshine Beach and our very own Nudgee Beach, Madam Chair, which is the only one really in Brisbane."

" Our beaches have become playgrounds and toilets for unleashed dogs, turning a treasure for all into an exclusive domain for the few."

The other day, when we took our dog for a walk on the foreshore, five (!!!!) off-leash dogs charged at us. We didn't know those dogs. We didn't know whether their owners were able to control them. Our current dog doesn't seem to attract aggressions by other dogs. But she is a very strong dog. And she became quite unsettled by those 5 dogs charging at us, This was very uncomfortable for us. It is very hard to control our dog once she feels threatened or exited by other dogs.

Brisbane City Council, why are you doing this to us, your voters and your rate and tax payers?
