"According to the Judicial Council of California, a conservatorship – sometimes known as a guardianship – happens when 'a judge appoints a responsible person or organization (called the 'conservator') to care for another adult (called the 'conservatee') who cannot care for himself or herself or manage his or her own finances.'”

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day!

June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day! Older Adults are often victims of financial exploitation. One way that they are victimized financially is by being used in scams as “Money Mules” or “Money Movers.” Our message to Older Adults in Ventura County is don't be a money mule! Some helpful tips include:

Don't agree to receive money or packages from people you don't know.

Do not forward anything you receive requesting you to receive/send money or packages to anyone.

Don't engage in financial transactions with strangers.

Research any work from home opportunities or offers involving transferring money or packages with a trusted family member or friend.

and most importantly: Do your homework to keep yourself and your finances safe!

"Recent movies on major streaming channels have raised a lot of interest and questions surrounding conservatorship. Some of the portrayals - such as the Netflix movie, I Care A Lot - have propagated false and misleading information about the role of a professional conservator (termed a guardian in the movie), the legal parameters of their role, and their ethical constitution.

PFAC, working with a team of conservatorship attorneys, has created a website for people to find the facts about professional conservatorship in California. We asked people who viewed the movie to give us the questions that arose for them when watching the film and used those, along with other fact-finding questions, to create a list of FAQs."

"The holidays are often filled with sharing, laughter and memories. But they can also bring stress, disappointment, sadness — and due to the COVID-19 pandemic — heightened risk for spreading the virus, especially for older adults who tend to have underlying health conditions. A person living with Alzheimer’s may feel a special sense of loss during the holidays because of the changes he or she has experienced. At the same time, caregivers may feel overwhelmed by maintaining traditions while providing care and adhering to safety precautions."

"A touching video showing a former ballet dancer afflicted with memory loss gracefully dancing as she hears the music from Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake has gone viral worldwide.

The video was recently shared by the Asociación Música para Despertar, a Spanish organization that promotes music therapy for those afflicted by memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Since then, media organizations, celebrities and individuals across the globe have shared the video of former dancer Marta C. González."

Viewers worldwide are responding to a moving video of Marta C. González, a former dancer afflicted with dementia. But critics are questioning whether González is who the clip makers claim she is.

"An award-winning app that can help patients with dementia will launch later this month in app stores. But unlike most apps — made by professional software developers in a male-dominated tech industry — this one was created by three teenage girls.

The Nigerian-Irish teens are the champions of Technovation Girls, an international competition that challenges young women to develop an app that can solve a problem in their community. The annual competition is hosted by Technovation, a nonprofit organization that empowers girls to become leaders in tech."

They faced bias against women in science. They faced racism because their families come from Africa. And they triumphed in a competition to develop a problem-solving app!
