My client, a poor college student preparing for medical school, donated her eggs to help families struggling to conceive. Oocyte, or egg, donation is an uncomfortable process, but she pushed through. The clinic got terrific results, asked her to donate again, upped the medication dosage, and took even more eggs. Less than a week later she suffered severe pain, nausea, and fever. She called the clinic and was directed to go to the emergency room where she was diagnosed with hyperstimulation syndrome, a known risk to egg donation. The clinic later refused to cover her $1,500+ ER bill. Tough luck, they said.
I teamed up with Senator Stephanie Pitcher to draft a bill making clinics cover these known risks for 90 days post-donation. It's now LAW, thanks to my brave client, who came with me to the Capitol prepared to testify in front of committees about her experience. Now, clinics must take responsibility for donors' care instead of abandoning them after the procedure.
I appreciate Senator Pitcher's invaluable assistance and support. It was a privilege to bring my team and my daughter to meet her and to observe the legislative process firsthand.
